DUNDALK have confirmed the departure of banned keeper George Shelvey.

Shelvey copped a 10-match suspension for calling referee Rob Harvey an ‘Irish c***’ following Dundalk’s last-gasp defeat to Drogheda United at the start of May.

That was in accordance with FIFA regulations because the abuse was of a racist or discriminatory nature.

At the time, Dundalk said in a statement: “While George realised very quickly that he had used inappropriate language, he did not, at first, comprehend the discriminatory aspect of his words.

“However, having discussed the matter with club officials he now fully accepts that his words were not only offensive, but also discriminatory.

“Going forward, Dundalk FC will work with George to develop his understanding of these issues.”

However, he has now parted company with the Lilywhites having served only three matches of his suspension.

A statement said: “Following conversations with George Shelvey, Dundalk FC has agreed to mutually end the player’s contract with the club.”

The 23-year-old had made nine appearances since joining Nottingham Forest on a one-year deal in pre-season.

He was taken off at half-time by former manager Stephen O’Donnell after a poor performance in only his third outing, a 5-0 home defeat to Sligo Rovers.

But he had been restored to the starting line-up by caretaker boss Brian Gartland and had kept his place in the side until his sending off after the final whistle in the Louth derby.

Ross Munro has played since but new boss Jon Daly is expected to sign another keeper in the transfer window.
